With the world facing unprecedented challenges in the face of this pandemic, we at Zoo Miami wanted to try to lift your spirits by giving you a little bit of “Hope.”
“Hope,” is our baby koala that was actually born back in May of last year but didn’t make an official exit out of his mother’s pouch until January of this year when we were first able to really see him. He is the first koala born at the zoo in over 20 years and his arrival was a huge celebration for all of us.
He was given the name, “Hope,” in honor of all of the individuals in Australia who, at the time, were fighting catastrophic fires. The intention was that naming this baby koala “Hope” would be an inspiration to all of those working to save countless animals, including koalas that were burned and displaced, and seen in so many heart-wrenching videos. Fortunately, Australia has finally been able to extinguish most of those fires and they are now on the road to recovery.
Though Hope was named initially because of the situation in Australia, it is our wish now that he can provide a little bit of hope to the present situation being faced around the world and perhaps bring a smile to our faces amid all of the stress.
With that in mind, we wanted to provide you with this video titled, “A Day in the Life of Hope the Koala.” Because koalas can sleep more than 18 hours each day, it took many hours to capture the images you will see condensed into two and a half minutes. However, we think that after being overwhelmed by what seems to be constant bad news, viewing this video of “Hope” and his wonderful mom, “Rinny,” will leave you with a more positive feeling that there is hope for the future.
