On the road in Tallahassee, as the Tristin Murphy Act officially passes | Facing South Florida

In this week’s edition of Facing South Florida:

CBS News Miami’s Jim DeFede travels to the state capitol for this remote special edition of Facing. The occasion was the Florida Senate this week unanimously passing legislation that changes the way mentally ill people are detained for most non-violent offenses.

The legislation is a direct result of the CBS Miami documentary “Warehoused: The Life and Death of Tristin Murphy.” Jim brought Tristin’s story to light and was there, along with Tristin’s parents, for what supporters argue is the most significant reform to dealing with the mentally ill in the criminal justice system since the passage of the Baker Act 50 years ago.

Included in the coverage is an emotional interview with Tristin’s mother Cindee Murphy. It was only through Cindee’s bravery in sharing Tristin’s story, that the Tristin Murphy Act has come as far as it has.

Plus, DeFede also has an extended sit-down one-on-one interview with Florida Senate President Ben Albritton. As Governor Ron DeSantis and House Speaker Danny Perez continue to battle each other on a host of issues, it is Albritton who has emerged as the powerful swing vote in deciding how best to proceed on everything from tax policy to condo reform.
