Ormond Beach, Fla. — April 24, 2025 — A 35‑year‑old Ormond Beach resident was found dead Wednesday morning of a suspected fentanyl overdose, and detectives with the Volusia Sheriff’s Office (VSO) arrested her alleged supplier less than eight hours later, authorities said.
Trevin D. Smith, 32, was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after investigators with the VSO Overdose Task Force discovered text messages on the victim’s phone arranging the purchase of fentanyl and offering additional drugs, according to an arrest report.
Detectives posed as the victim and set up a meeting with Smith at a 7‑Eleven on West Granada Boulevard. When deputies converged, Smith fled on foot, tossing a cellphone and a small plastic bag that later tested positive for fentanyl, the Sheriff’s Office said. He was captured moments later at a nearby gas station following a brief chase.
The victim, whose name has not been released pending family notification, was pronounced dead at her home shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday. The medical examiner will determine the official cause of death, but investigators said evidence at the scene pointed to fentanyl, a synthetic opioid up to 50 times stronger than heroin.
Smith now faces multiple charges, including:
• Sale and delivery of fentanyl
• Resisting an officer without violence
• Use of a two‑way communication device to facilitate a felony
• Driving with a suspended license
• Child neglect
Deputies said Smith’s toddler was in the back seat of his vehicle without a car seat or restraints at the time of the arrest. The child was turned over to the Department of Children and Families.
Smith is being held at the Volusia County Branch Jail without bond. The overdose death investigation is ongoing, and additional charges—such as homicide in the distribution of a fatal dose—are possible pending toxicology results, officials said.
The case marks the latest action by the VSO Overdose Task Force, formed in 2022 to combat the county’s rising opioid‑related deaths. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the VSO Major Case Unit or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 1‑888‑277‑TIPS (8477).
