President Biden & former President Trump take stage in first presidential debate 2024 | Quickcast

In today’s Quickcast:

President Biden and former President Donald Trump squared off in the first presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle last night, a 90-minute affair that was defined by rambling answers by the current president, and lies and misstatements by his predecessor.
The candidates fielded questions about the economy, abortion, the Middle East, the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, Trump’s recent criminal conviction and more. CNN hosted the debate in Atlanta, with anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash serving as moderators. Each candidate’s microphone was muted when it was not his turn to speak, and there was no studio audience in attendance.
Mr. Biden stumbled through many of his answers early on in the debate and sounded like he was losing his voice, apparently because he has been battling a cold. While he improved over the course of the night, he often lost his train of thought and struggled to communicate his positions on a variety of issues. His performance alarmed many of his fellow Democrats. "I’ve never seen a freakout like this," one House Democrat told CBS News, referring to reaction among party lawmakers.
Trump sounded energetic in comparison, even as he mischaracterized his record and many of the president’s positions throughout the night. He lied repeatedly about a variety of topics, including abortion, his recent criminal conviction and Mr. Biden’s immigration record.

Detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man they say carjacked a woman’s vehicle while her 3-year-old daughter was still inside and later abandoned the toddler in Oakland Park earlier this week.
Around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the Broward County Sheriff’s Special Victims Unit was called out to a report of a stolen vehicle at 850 W. Commercial Blvd.
During the investigation, detectives learned that a mother and her daughter were involved in a car crash with another driver in the area. While the mother left her car to exchange information with the other driver, the unknown man jumped into the mother’s vehicle and began to drive away while her toddler was still in her car seat, BSO said.
Investigators said the mom tried grabbing onto the front passenger door of her car and yelled out to the man that her daughter was still inside. She held onto her and was dragged along with it for a short bit before falling onto the ground as the man drove off.
As the investigation continued, detectives found surveillance video that captured several moments following the crash. First, the man is seen jumping out of the woman’s car to take out her toddler and the car seat, abandoning them on a sidewalk. Then, he’s seen in another video abandoning the car. And finally, the man is seen using the woman’s credit card at a Family Dollar store.

The Supreme Court on Friday ruled in favor of a former Pennsylvania police officer who was charged with obstructing an official proceeding after he entered the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021, and narrowed the Justice Department’s use of a federal obstruction statute leveled against scores of people who breached the building where Congress had convened to count state electoral votes.
The court ruled 6-3 in finding that to prove a violation of the obstruction law, the government must show that the defendant impaired the availability or integrity of records, documents or other objects used in an official proceeding. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson joined five conservatives in the majority, while Justice Amy Coney Barrett sided with the two other liberals.
The case was sent back to the lower court for further proceedings, and the court said it can assess the sufficiency of the obstruction charge brought against defendant Joseph Fischer in light of its ruling.
Writing for the court, Chief Justice John Roberts said that accepting the Justice Department’s reading of the law would give prosecutors "broad discretion to seek a 20-year maximum sentence for acts Congress saw fit to punish only with far shorter terms of imprisonment.
