Fire at Georgia chemical plant prompts evacuation

Some residents east of Atlanta were evacuated, while others were advised to shelter in place due to a chemical plume following a fire at a chemical plant. Footage shows gray smoke rising into the sky. Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel reported that the incident began around 5 a.m. Sunday when a sprinkler system malfunctioned at the BioLab plant in Conyers. Water mixed with a reactive chemical, releasing a plume of unknown chemicals. Although a small roof fire was initially contained, it reignited later that afternoon, according to Sheriff Eric Levett.
